Reader Email: Why are my BRG requests being denied?

Hi everyone,
Thrilled to find this group: the BRG is an amazing way of getting free accomodation. I have used it in the US as well as in the UK. But I have had problems when comparing to websites with pre-paid rates, such as Expedia. Triprewards Best Rates are not pre paid, and that´s been a reason to neglect my claims. What´s your experience about this?
--Markus, Sweden

------------------------------

Hi Marcus, thanks for the message,

Almost 100% of BRG opportunities are through Expedia, Travelocity, and other prepaid sites. If a rate is not prepaid, it is most often through the hotel itself, which is usually the same price as Triprewards is. The prepaid rates are rates that have been negotiated by websites with the hotel themselves - the hotel does not set those rates and cannot change them.

I think the BRG staff may just be giving you a hard time, or you may be making an error in your claim forms. I'd need to know the exact error they're giving you to help you out further, but the website should not be an issue whatsoever, unless you are using Skoosh or one of the prepaid voucher sites (where a printed voucher is generated and you must take this to the hotel to check in). For more info about that, see my rant on Skoosh back in January.

Please read some of the earlier posts of this blog to learn how to maximize the chances of success with your BRG claims.

If you have any more questions, we're always here to help.

Two hour advance notice (deals only) for email subscribers

As many of you may have heard, TravelGlitch.com has offered advance notice to its email subscribers (which uses Google Groups, like my blog). He's charging $25.00 for this "service".

My competitive spirit won't allow such a slap in the face to those looking for a deal. At The BRG Blog, we now offer an advance notification service free of charge. You aren't a money-making tool to me, you're a valued reader whom I love to help save money. Because I'm sick of the way TravelGlitch treats its readers like customers, I decided to do this small attempt at oneupmanship.

So, all subscribers to the BRG Blog email list will receive at least a two hour notification before a deal is posted online. I won't do advance notice for blog entries that aren't about specific BRG deals - such as posts like this, or my previous one about the Screenshot site.

And it goes without saying, your email will not be sold. Ever.

How do you subscribe? Enter your details on the sidebar.

Three airlines fold within 3 days of each other - a sign of the times?

It seems the U.S economic condition has worsened to the point that three airlines have decided to call it quits, right at the end of the second quarter, within the same 72 hour period. Now that's shocking.

Aloha Airlines was the first contender. This airline was in business for 61 YEARS. That's a long time. Bratty Mesa Airlines's GO! came onto the scene a couple of years ago, causing many headaches to "mom and pop" airlines like Aloha. They just couldn't keep up. One thing is for certain now - we probably won't be seeing $29 interisland fares anymore. While I doubt Hawaiian is going to fall anytime soon, they'll have to work hard to keep Go! from taking Aloha's share of business and keep their spot as Hawaii's most prominent airline.

Then, ATA called it quits. This Southwest Airlines partner was never a favorite of mine, and I can't say I didn't see this coming. While their fares were decently low, I only heard terrible things about the airline, and thus avoided it (much like I do with Southwest). With all the airlines heading over to Hawaii, I don't put my faith in the media's assertion that ATA's demise will raise Hawaii fares that drastically. Sure, it will be hard for fare wars to begin once there aren't as many players as before, but I never really considered ATA a major airline to Hawaii anyways (even if most of their schedules went there).

Then suddenly, right before midnight today, cheapie Skybus called it quits. I was excited at the prospect of $10 tickets when they served Bellingham, WA, but since they pulled out in January, I've largely ignored this airline. All flights were via Columbus, and to get anywhere else, you'd need to buy two tickets. This airline's main problem was serving small rural airports that were very inconvenient from the city's they supposedly served (ie. calling Portsmouth, New Hampshire "Boston", and Biloxi, Mississippi "New Orleans"). Not to say I wouldn't fly them for $10, but I wouldn't ever, ever pay their rack rates of $50 - $150 depending on route - sacrificing frequent flyer miles to save a few bucks is insulting.

So, what's the point of all this blather? These bankruptcies may be a sign of things to come.

As the U.S. economy worsens, with rising oil prices and high American unemployment, airlines are beginning to suffer. Right now, I am glad to be an Albertan, as the economy here is hotter than ever and unemployment is almost zero, but I feel for my American neighbors, who seem to have traded places economically with Canada in recent years. The US economy's health affects the entire world, especially the airline industry. Let's hope the US does not enter any further into recession, or travelling will become increasingly difficult.

What comes next? Northwest Airlines just announced they are freezing employment (aka not hiring any new workers), will add a host of service charges for extra bags, and will cut many domestic routes this year. This is the airline I think will either fold very soon, or will merge with Delta Airlines. Be wary about hoarding NWA World perks Miles in your account, and hoarding miles for ANY airline, in general. Make haste to get your award tickets booked sooner rather than later. You NEVER KNOW what may come, even overnight, as we can see with these three airlines folding.

Be warned, and let's hope I'm just a pessimist.

Expedia's 24 Hour Sale: TODAY ONLY SUBMIT YOUR CLAIMS OR GET SCREENSHOT TONIGHT!

Well, folks, Expedia's 24 Hour Sale is back. Here are a list of some of the opportunities you can possibly get today. I can't verify it they will work for you, as by the time my claims are answered, they'll be gone. But here's what I can see that will probably work:

Wingate Hotel Schaumburg/Convention Center (Chicago, Illinois suburbs)
Example: April 16-17. Expedia: $118.15, Triprewards $139.00. Looks GOOD.

Ramada Savannah, Georgia I-95
Example: April 16-17. Expedia $56.00, Triprewards $79.99
Note that there are two same descriptions on Expedia - this may not work - try submitting a screenshot for one of the two (cheaper), but expect the run-around for this one.

Ramada Surrey/Langley (Vancouver, British Columbia suburbs - just miles north of I-5)
Example: April 16-17. Expedia $92.65, Triprewards $109.00. This one looks GOOD.

Possibly many other dates - play around. Enjoy!

UPDATE: Travelodge LAX South has CHANGED!!!

The unthinkable has happened. Perhaps I didn't knock on wood as I should have, but this deal is no longer going to work. It seems it took a year, but Travelodge LAX South has finally smartened up to this deal and has created a 14 day advance of its own, with no prepay, thus thwarting the deal. This change is NEW, so pardon my ignorance - I just did a BRG claim a week ago. They must have changed it in the past five days or so.

The good news: It's still available for the 24 hour method I listed. So, if you can work last minute, try it out for a free room.

I'm not happy at all.

Thanks to "d" for pointing this out. Often I'm lazy and will just assume Triprewards hasn't changed anything (even more lazy in this case since they have never, ever changed rates for this hotel in the past, and I just assumed they wouldn't have). I'll try to refrain from posting incorrect information in the future. Sorry to anyone whose hopes I had heightened.

It's still around - LAX Travelodge South - Los Angeles, California

This one comes and goes, but it is generally one of the best BRG opportunities in the country in terms of availability. I've only missed a couple dates I've needed, otherwise this one is always around.

The key here are two sales Expedia has for this property. One is the "Early Booking Bonus", where you must book between 14 and 30 days out, in order to get it to price at 20% less than Triprewards. The other is the last minute sale - it's always discounted 24 hours prior to check in. The only cases where this one will not work for you is if you require it between 1 and 14 days after booking.

This is generally a good hotel - no frills by any means, but a good basecamp for exploring LA, and right next to the airport. There isn't much airport noise, which means a good night's sleep isn't hard to get. Breakfast is included, and the staff are usually quite friendly. It's in the process of being remodeled, but there is not much noise to complain about. The property keeps getting better every time I visit in terms of looks, comfort, and agreeableness. Limo service is included from the airport (private car hire).

Without further ado, here are the details, once again:

Competitor Website: http://www.expedia.com

Availability: Within 24 hours or between 14-30 days from today.

Occupancy: 2 Persons

Details: One Queen, Two Doubles, or One King. I find the King to be the most comfortable.

Rate variation: 20% less on Expedia if you follow the above rules.

Confirmed Approvals (Approver if known): At least 30. All but BT have approved.

Special Comments: This one's a no-brainer. You always should get this room, or you are doing something wrong.

Competitor Website: http://www.expedia.com

Availability: Most dates this Spring

Occupancy: 2 Persons

Details: 2 Queen Beds Room

Rate variation: 10% less on Expedia.com (through Expedia's "spring sale")

Confirmed Approvals (Approver if known): KM

Some minor errors with the ChangeAlarm...

Hello everyone,

Some of you have mentioned problems with the Changealarm - that it is sending you notifications the page has changed when it actually hasn't.

I believe (but am not certain) that this is due to the "poll" feature on this page. When a visitor responds to the poll, the numbers change, and thus changealarm sees the page as being "updated" when in reality only the numbers have.

I'll remove the poll feature, and let's see if the problems go away.

Happy Easter Weekend! And a new feature of this blog..

Happy Easter, everyone!

Our friend Rick at Frugal Travel Guy suggested that I add a "Change Alarm" to this blog, which will allow you, the reader, to sign up for email notifications when this blog is updated with a new BRG deal. This will allow you to get a slight upper hand over those who don't sign up, as you'll hear about them sooner and have first dibs at the free rooms.

The link to sign up for the Change Alarm is on your right, in the sidebar. I encourage you to sign up.

Well, I'm heading out on a BRG run to the beautiful Pacific Northwest this week. Free rooms in Vancouver, Victoria, and Seattle. It will be a nice Spring Break getaway. Man, do I love Triprewards.

Since I will be away, don't expect too much in terms of free room notifications, but I will attempt at glancing for some every now and then. Enjoy the first week of spring!

Howard Johnson Hotel - Gallup, New Mexico

This one comes to us courtesy of one of our regular contributors. Here it is:

Hotel Address: 3404 W Highway 66

Competitor Website: www.hotels.com

Availability: Sample dates in late April (23-24) and possibly many more.

Occupancy: 2 Persons

Details: 1 Double Bed Room

Rate variation: $40.00 TR, $38.00 Hotels.com.

***************
Also, to my readers, please post a comment if you are successful in getting your claim. Simply hit "comment" and let us all know. You can remain anonymous - I know many of you are worried about TR figuring out who you are, but let's not get too paranoid. :)

Expedia's 24 Hour Sale - Possible BRG Opportunities

Expedia's 24 Hour sale is back - these are usually great times to snatch up free rooms, but you will have to act fast - you must make your screenshots and claim on TR TODAY.

The pickings are slim, but here are two possible contenders - GOOD ones, at that. I can't say how successful these will be, because by the time I find out, it will be too late. But, I have a good feeling about these - especially the Wingate. Here they are:

RAMADA MALL OF AMERICA - Minneapolis area, MN (20% off today only)

WINGATE BY WYNDHAM - Orlando, Florida (30% off today only)

In addition to the BRG opportunities, there are several good deals on hotels for purchase. Today might be a good day to book travel in places where BRGs are impossible due to always-equal rates or lack of Triprewards properties. Here's a few good deals that caught our eye (see below the list for instructions to save $20 per night on these rates):

Castle Maile Sky Court / Castle Hokele Suites (Honolulu, HI): Rates between $80 - $90.

The Westin Hotel LAX (Los Angeles, CA). 50% off today, rates around $114.00.

Custom Hotel (El Segundo, CA). 40% off today, rates around $83.00.

Knott's Berry Farm Hotel (Anaheim, CA). 30% off today, rates around $70.00.

Red Roof Inn ORD (Chicago, IL). 20% off today, rates around $40.00.

Comfort Inn Niagara Falls. 15% off today, rates around $50.00.

The deals go on and on, but this is what struck me as good from a cursory glance. Deals are best (40-50%) in obscure locations and large cities, with the weakest discounts in Canada (5-10%).

Couple these with a $20 per night discount (MUST use a Mastercard to book) using Expedia.com coupon code MCAHOTEL20 (enter the code in the box after pricing out your hotel choice), it will reflect immediately. With this coupon code, some of these hotels are almost free. Your stay must be completed by April 30, 2008 to use this code.

How to actually make money on a BRG - A reader explains...

Our friend Janis provides this tip to those who are planning on booking Wyndham BRGs:

"When making reservations at http://www.wyndham.com, be sure to go through ebates.com first, and you will receive $5 back on your booking! If your BRG claim is valid, you will end up ahead $5 on the deal."

Ebates.com is a website that allows you to recieve cash back on your online purchases. Every three months, they will send a Paypal payment (or snail mail cheque) with the funds you earned. I've made over $100 since joining their site, so I can vouch that it is legitimate.

Thanks, Janis for bringing to our attention this great opportunity. 20 successful BRG claims through Wyndham = $100 in pocket plus the roughly $3,000 in free rooms. Not bad at all.

As a thank you to Janis for providing the tip, joining through the link below will help her out at no cost to yourself. I urge everyone to at least sign up - there is a bonus for you, too. New referrals will receive $10 in their account - but you MUST sign up via a referral, namely the link below. Also, you must make at least one purchase before March 31 to qualify and receive the money.

Wyndham Hotel - Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina

This one comes to us courtesy of our friend Janis, an avid reader of the blog. This looks like a foolproof BRG, sure to be approved.

If they deny your claim for any reason, you will not be eligible for any refund of your booking. Read the Terms and Conditions well before doing any Wyndham-related claim.

Expedia 24 HOUR SALE - Huge BRG Opportunities!!!

Sorry for the delays in updating this site. I've been travelling for the past three weeks and hadn't any time to devote to it. Speaking of which, if there is anyone interested in being a guest writer on this blog, and wants to join the team, let me know. Now, without further ado...

EXPEDIA's 24 HOUR SALE! I didn't know about this until now, I've been out of the loop, but there are MANY good opportunities. Here are a few gems I've found. I can't guarantee you'll get any approved, as there is only 6 hours left in this sale, but if you're reading this and it is before 10 PM Central Daylight Time, get your claims in! And remember to MAKE A SCREENSHOT WITH DATE AND TIME STAMP!

Dates available through April 30, by the looks of it.

Here's some of the opportunities I found:

*Ramada Inn and Suites - Surrey, BC (Vancouver area -only will work with 2 Queen Beds Rooms, no suites) - to book this one, you'll need to visit Expedia.CA.

*Days Inn Hotel Circle - San Diego, CA

*Days Inn Seattle South - Tukwila, WA

* Days Inn City Center - Spokane, WA

Along with these BRG opps, there are SEVERAL good rates on hotels - some eye catchers were the $20/night rates at Whiskey Pete's in Primm, NV (a decent, good hotel, a steal at that price) and several top-end hotels like the Sheraton and Westin in the $80 - $120 range.

Check out Expedia's sale here.

Enjoy!
